It begins with careful attention, hard work, and a deep respect for the traditions that have shaped Transylvania’s vineyards for generations.

As you look through the photos of our team working among the vines, you may notice that we are removing leaves from around the grape clusters. At first glance, this may seem unusual. Why would anyone remove healthy leaves from a thriving grapevine?

The answer lies in one of the most important vineyard practices of the growing season—canopy management, or leaf thinning. This work is a vital step that helps ensure healthier vines, higher-quality grapes, and ultimately, better wine.

Letting the Sunshine In

Grapevines naturally produce an abundance of leaves during the growing season. While these leaves are essential for photosynthesis and the overall health of the plant, too many leaves can create a dense canopy that shades the grape clusters.

By carefully trimming selected leaves around the fruit, we allow more sunlight to reach the grapes. Sunlight plays a significant role in helping grapes ripen evenly and develop the sugars, colors, and flavors that define the character of the wine.

For red varieties, better sun exposure can enhance color development and contribute to more complex flavors. For white grapes, proper sunlight helps achieve the balance between freshness and ripeness that winemakers seek.

The goal is never to expose the grapes excessively, but rather to create the ideal environment for them to mature naturally.

Improving Airflow and Reducing Disease

One of the greatest challenges in any vineyard is managing moisture.

When leaves become too dense around grape clusters, humidity can become trapped, especially after rain or morning dew. This creates conditions that can encourage mildew, mold, and other fungal diseases.

By opening up the canopy, we improve airflow throughout the vineyard. Breezes can move freely between the vines, helping the grapes dry more quickly and reducing the risk of disease.

This traditional technique has been used by vineyard stewards for centuries and remains one of the most effective natural methods of protecting grape quality.

Focusing the Vine’s Energy

A grapevine has only so much energy during a growing season.

When a vine is producing an excessive amount of foliage, part of its resources are dedicated to supporting those leaves. Strategic leaf thinning helps direct more of the vine’s energy toward developing healthy, flavorful grapes.

Every cut we make is intentional. Vineyard work is as much an art as it is a science. The objective is balance—a vine with enough leaves to remain healthy while allowing the fruit to become the best version of itself.

A Labor of Love

Leaf trimming is not glamorous work.

It involves long hours under the summer sun, walking row after row, examining each vine, and making decisions one cluster at a time. There are no shortcuts when quality is the goal.

This is where the human touch makes all the difference.

Every vine has its own personality. Some require more attention than others. Some rows receive more sunlight, while others benefit from additional airflow. Understanding these subtle differences comes only through experience and spending time in the vineyard.

It is hard work, but it is also deeply rewarding.

As we move through the rows, we know that each vine we care for today helps create the harvest of tomorrow.

Preserving the Spirit of Richiș

At The Inn at Richiș, we do not view vineyard work simply as agriculture. We see it as a way of preserving the traditions, culture, and landscape that make this corner of Transylvania so special.

Richiș has been shaped by generations of hardworking people who understood the value of patience, craftsmanship, and living in harmony with the land. Their knowledge continues to guide us today.

The vineyards surrounding our village are part of a larger story—one that connects history, family, hospitality, and wine.

This is the Spirit of Richiș.

It is found in the vineyards, in the centuries-old wine cellars, in conversations shared around a table, and in the simple pleasures of slowing down and appreciating the moment.

The Warmth of Gemütlichkeit

Guests who visit The Inn at Richiș often tell us there is something unique about the atmosphere here.

The Germans have a word for it: Gemütlichkeit.

It describes a feeling of warmth, comfort, belonging, and genuine hospitality. It is the sensation of sitting by a fire with a glass of local wine. It is sharing stories with friends old and new. It is finding peace in a place where time seems to move a little slower.

The care we give our vineyard reflects this philosophy. Every leaf trimmed, every row maintained, and every harvest celebrated contributes to an experience that is authentic and meaningful.

This is The Warmth of Gemütlichkeit.

Transylvania Is a Way of Life

The photos below show only a small part of the work that goes into each vintage. Behind every bottle is a season filled with dedication, patience, and respect for nature.

Our vineyard reminds us that the best things cannot be rushed. Great wine, like meaningful experiences, takes time.

As we continue this year’s work among the vines, we are grateful to share this journey with you.

Because here, at The Inn at Richiș, we believe that “Transylvania is a way of life.”

Every season teaches us something new. Every harvest tells a story. And every guest who visits becomes part of that story.

We look forward to raising a glass with you soon.

The Inn at Richiș

Spirit of Richiș

The Warmth of Gemütlichkeit

Transylvania is a way of life

innatrichis.com

At The Inn at Richiș, great wine begins long before the harvest.
