The Story of Biertan Begins Centuries Ago<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The village is documented in the 13th century, and the local municipality notes that a priest named Johannes was associated with Biertan in a document from 1283<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first specific documentary reference to the church dates to 1402<\/strong>, when Pope Boniface IX granted an indulgence associated with the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Did Biertan Need Such a Powerful Fortress?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

For almost three centuries<\/strong>, from 1572 until 1867, the village served as the episcopal center of the Saxon Lutheran Church in Transylvania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a beautifully carved stone pulpit dating from the early 16th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
